The Value of Our Commitments
Lately, I’ve noticed a trend in reconsidering commitments. Streaming subscriptions, services, memberships — especially right now. People are paying closer attention to the things for which they’ve signed up.
What’s worth it. What gets used. What quietly renews without really adding anything . . .
It’s made me think about the non-transactional subscriptions we carry, too. The expectations to which we’re still subscribed. Opportunities to opt-out that still linger. The ideas about ourselves that made sense at one point, but feel heavier now.
And then, there are the ones we don’t necessarily want to cancel, but require something different of us now that life and circumstances have changed. They require an adjustment, a new boundary, or a different level of energy or involvement.
Not everything we’re holding onto is wrong. Some of it just doesn’t fit the same way anymore. And sometimes, the subscription is something we’ve outgrown. It could be asking more from us than it gives back.
Unlike the obvious subscriptions, these don’t come with a clear “manage plan” button. They drive us to ask:
What am I still subscribed to that I wouldn’t actively choose today?
What has become heavier than it needs to be?
What might need to be released?
What might need to be renegotiated?
These adjustments don’t have to happen all at once; just thoughtfully and at a pace that works. Making space doesn’t always look like a big reset. Sometimes it’s a quiet unsubscribe. And sometimes it’s deciding to stay, but in a different way.
What subscriptions are you ready to adjust right now as you consider your short- and long-term goals? And if you’re wanting a collaborative partner to review your commitments, plans and goals, my Spring Refresh package is open this season.
